The Uncompromising Beauty of
PALESTINIAN COSTUMES
Perhaps one of the Middle East’s most
interesting costume traditions, Palestinian embroidery
is enjoying a revival thanks to a handful of colourful
exhibitions on textiles in the last few years,
stretching from the Los Angeles Museum of Arts and
Crafts to Abu Dhabi’s TDIC. A globetrotting anthology
courtesy of Hanan Munayyer - president of the
Palestinian Heritage Foundation and owner of one of the
world’s largest collections – has helped the cause. Add
to that, workshops like Inaash in Lebanon and Anat in
Syria that work with Palestinian refugees to keep this
remarkable art alive, and there you have it – a
millenary tradition that still lives on today. Famous
for its colour and incredible needlework, Palestinian
embroidery has played a quasi-political role as well. In
the old days, certain patterns and needlework were
indicative of a person’s village: from what a woman
wore, you could figure out where she came from.
In the 20th century, embroidery has
served as a tool to assert Palestinian identity. One
beautiful volume now showcases 25 years of research by
Munayyer, who has trolled museums, libraries and private
collections around the world to shape this book. It
documents costumes from antiquity to modern times,
categorizing regional specificities, especially since
the late 19th century onwards. Superbly illustrated –
the book counts no less than 700 photographs documenting abayas, head gear, sashes, and the all important bride’s
trousseaus, which young girls would start working on
from their early teens - this is a mesmerizing must-have
coffee table book: “ Traditional Palestinian Costume –
Origins and Evolution", by Hanan Karaman Munayyer.

ألثلاثاء
في قاعة فندق سانت مرغريت في الناصرة حفل توقيع كتاب "
الأثواب التقليدية الفلسطينية (نشأت وتطور)" للسيدة حنان
قرمان منيٌر التي وصلت من الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية حيث
تقيم مع زوجها السيد فرح منير.
أبتدأ الحفل بكلمة ترحيبية من السيد بشير نصير ثم قام
المربي أديب حزان بتقديم كاتبة الكتاب السيدة حنان وزوجها
فرح مرحبا بهما في مدينة الناصرة ومشيدا بهذا الأنجاز
الثقافي والوطني والحضاري الكبير.
السيدة حنان منيٌر قدمت عرضا موجزا عن كتابها وأبرزت بعضا
من المصادر التي لجأت اليها للحصول على الصور والوثائق
التاريخية. حيث أن هذا الكتاب المجلد هو نتاج عمل متواصل
مدته 25 عاما.
كما أجابت السيدة حنان على أسئلة ومداخلات الحضور وأختتم
الأحتفال بكلمة سيادة المطران عطاالله حنا رئيس أساقفة
سبسطية للروم الأرثوذكس الذي شكر السيدة حنان على مجهودها
حيث أن هذا المجلد يعتبر أضافة نوعية للمكتبة التاريخية
الحضارية والأنسانية وهو كتاب متميز بالوثائق والصور
والنصوص التاريخية التي تبرز الوجه الحقيقي لأمتنا وشعبنا.
وأعتبر سيادته هذا الأنجاز بأنه تاريخي.
يذكر أن تقديم الكتاب في العاصمة الأردنية عمان سيكون في
مؤسسة شومان الثقافية مساء يوم 1 حزيران.
يذكر أن هذا الكتاب المجلد يحتوي على أكثر من 560 صفحة
من الحجم الكبير ويحتوي على صور تاريخية غاية في الدقة
والأتقان اضافة
الى معلومات تاريخية هامة.
السيدة حنان تقيم في نيوجيرسي في الولايات المتحدة
الأمريكية منذ أكثر من 40 عاما وقد أسست مع زوجها فرح
مؤسسة التراث الفلسطيني وهي ناشطة في الحقل الثقافي
والوطني ويعتبر كتابها فريدا من نوعه أذ أنها المرة
الأولى التي يصدر بها
كتاب توثيقي بهذا الحجم وبهذا المستوى الراقي عن التراث
الفلسطيني.

السيدة حنان منير وما قامت به من نشاطات وفعاليات فلسطينية
تحمل بعدا تراثيا تاريخيا حيث كان زوجها الفاضل فرح منيٌر
خير عون لها ومؤيد لنشاطاتها المتميزة.

الفلسطيني في نيوجيرسي تقيم معارض تراثية فلسطينية في كافة
الولايات الأمريكية اضافة الى مؤتمراتها وندواتها السنوية،
وقد قامت المؤسسة بتكريم المفكر الفلسطيني الكبير
ادوارد سعيد والمؤرخ الفلسطيني وليد الخالدي والدكتور
كلوفيس مقصود وغيرهم. فرح منيٌر أعرب عن تأثره البالغ
لتواجده في نابلس شاكرا سيادة المطران على اعداده لهذا
اللقاء ووقوفه الى جانب مؤسسة التراث الفلسطيني حيث تحدث
في مؤتمرها السنوي في نيوجيرسي قبل ثلاث سنوات بوجود
المطران فيليب صليبا وغيره من الشخصيات العربية في أمريكا.
فرح تحدث عن الجهود
التي بذلت من أجل انجاز هذا المشروع وأهمية اقتناء هذا
الكتاب لما يحتويه من معلومات هامة بعضها ينشر للمرة
الأولى حيث أن السيدة حنان جالت في كثير من الدول العالمية
والجامعات والمتاحف والمكتبات حتى وصلت الى هذا الانجاز
الكبير.

ألقت محاضرة مبرزة أهم ما جاء في كتابها وأجابت على أسئلة
الحضور. وفي الختام أقيم حفل استقبال بهذه المناسبة في
نادي المدينة.

من أساتذة جامعة النجاح والشخصيات الثقافية والأدبية
والأعتبارية في مدينة نابلس

Displays Palestinian costumes at Rutgers
University
On Friday March 25, 2011, the Palestinian Heritage Foundation
participated in "Celebrating Contemporary Arab
and Muslim Aesthetics," a one day cultural
event sponsored by the Center for Middle East Studies at
Rutgers University. The activities were held at the
Rutgers Student Center and included an exhibit of
paintings by Arab students. The audience enjoyed a live
music performance by the Layali Arabic Music Ensemble
and an exhibit of Palestinian Costumes from the Munayyer
Collection. The display was mounted in the Student
Center Exhibit case between March 21 and 25.
During this event, the Center for Middle East Studies honored the
Palestinian Heritage Foundation for its role in
promoting Palestinian art and culture as well as several
graduating students from the Rutgers community.
Costumes representing Jerusalem,
Bethlehem and the Naqab along with intricate brass items
were on display
Arab American Cultural Day in Montclair State University
On Saturday April 9, 2011, Hanan organized the Arab American Cultural
Day held at Dickinson Hall at Montclair State University
in Montclair, New Jersey. This event was presented by
the New Jersey Arab American Heritage Commission in
collaboration with the Center for Middle East Studies at
Rutgers University. PHF Founder Hanan Munayyer serves as
a member of the Heritage Commission.
This rich program included a mix of art, literature, music,
film and comedy. Artists Jihan Tannous, Mohamad Khalil
and Ghada Mitwasi introduced and discussed their work.
The event also included a screening of "Salt of this
Sea," a film produced by filmmaker Annemarie Jacir, and
a lecture by Prof. Moustafa Bayoumi, author of "How does
It Feel To Be a Problem: Being Young and Arab in
America." Master comedienne Maysoon Zayid provided
a highly entertaining close to the events.
During
the activities the public browsed through the Book and
Art Exhibits and enjoyed the music recital.
